I have a family member involved in the supply of similar materials
.
They are, however,
not Chinese.

Wow you inspired someone to spam others for a living. Good work

You definitely shouldn’t support these people. If they want to spam people they need to buy a booth at a convention/conference and give away freebies in exchange from scanning people’s badges like a normal company.

This reminds me of getting email addressed to “Professor [LimitedTimeOnly]” from an obscure academic publication that wanted me to publish future papers with it . I am not and never was a professor, just was named a co-author on one (1) published paper, presumably where they found my contact info .
For a brief period it was fun to imagine that I suddenly was hired into a new profession. Best spam I ever was emailed.

God Bless.

Often these emails are signed with deliberately white suburban sounding names, but the first give away is the common salutation, “greetings for the day!, ” which no white A merican has ever said ever.

Way to take the wind out of my sails, buddy.

You know, the quality of swag at conventions has gone way down over the years. Every once in a while, I get something like this embossed stainless steel USB stick from a Singapore dental school. They also gave me a stuffed lion (their mascot) that I gave to my daughter.
I don’t need any more coffee mugs though.

I know what you mean. It was fun early on. Then, as my time on faculty went on, it got old.

Ugh. I hate how “God Bless” has become a red flag.

Probably haven’t been to enough to judge. My company gave out crappy things :(. I did go to a Salesforce event and picked up a relatively nice little USB power bank from them, and some low quality (but functional) bluetooth headphones from some third-party I have forgotten.

Electronics like that are usually low quality, but they’re good enough to listen to an in-flight movie without you worrying about losing them.
I still pick up the USB sticks, even though they’re usually 1 GB, because they’re fine for putting a lecture or two on, but not a big deal if I forget one in a lecture hall. Then I don’t have to risk my 32 GB ones.

Thank you for Bette Midler running through my brain.

You so, so welcome.
Not sure if this question’s been asked of you before, but as an Opponaut with wheels and less than 100% functional heels, what’s your dream vehicle - the one you’d buy if money was truly no object?

It changes based on my need and mood, but the thing I want most is a really sexy GT car with no compromises luxury that is also convertible so I can enjoy a gorgeous day. Usually I say a Maserati Gran Cabrio because that hits most of the buttons. I wish they were updating it with modern cabin features instead of eliminating it.
Sometimes I want an ND Miata or maybe a Fist 124. They’re a blast to drive. The only problem is they are essentially a single seater vehicle for me.

I have friends who are professors, and I have to say that the more I learned about the work environment, the less that I ever wanted to change course and go into academia. Good luck!

Yeah, the more successful you get, the more BS you end up dealing with. It’s what made my mom leave early and go into private practice. Thanks though. I’m not totally beaten down by the system yet!

Oh, yeah... that would be awesome. My boss has a 911 4S Cab PDK that’s really nice.
I definitely see myself owning an ND Miata some day (once I can get a nice one, with the specs I want, for $10-15k).

You may not be that far off, depending on trim. For now, they do seem to be holding their value though. The Fiats are the real bargain, apparently. I like the Mazda version better though.

Problem is, I want a ‘19+ Club with the Brembos/BBS/Recaros. =)

Well yeah. You have a wait then.

I’m okay with that. Will still be shuttling kids for at least 3.5 more years (until my oldest can drive).

Are you sure

Yes. Although there are probably some Chinese folk named Bill.
